The Present Situation
We live in difficult times.
It is evident, for those who are in the biomedical research field since 20-30 or more years, that the relative impact of “relational abilities”(who you know, where you come from, how you maintain your social relationships…) became preponderant over merit, originality, creativity. This applies to many aspects of scientific research, such as grants, publications and promotions.
But it applies also to awards, prizes and similar achievements. It seems that, in the marketplace of power, every inch of it converts into an interchangeable “token” that can be used for any purpose. If your are in charge of an award, for example, you can exchange your vote (this is your “token”) for something else: a successful grant application, publication, another award… And when economical interests are present, companies, which hold the economical power, dictate who, when and where. Only scientists or physicians friendly to companies are allowed in.
This risks to take our society to a standstill, especially for what
pertains to innovation and creativity.
The Moscabianca award wants to give a small but evident sign in the opposite direction, recognizing a scientist who made a major discovery in the biomedical field, and whose contribution went unrecognized.
As such the Moscabianca award is independent and will not be entangled with companies and also with scientific societies which too often serve economical interests.
